Understanding GST in India
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple cascading taxes and created a unified tax system.
Types of GST
- CGST (Central GST): Goes to central government in intra-state transactions
- SGST (State GST): Goes to state government in intra-state transactions
- IGST (Integrated GST): Levied on inter-state transactions and imports
- UTGST (UT GST): For Union Territories without legislature
How GST Works
- Same State Purchase: CGST + SGST (e.g., 9% + 9% = 18% total)
- Different State Purchase: IGST only (e.g., 18% IGST)
- Input Tax Credit: Businesses can claim credit for GST paid on purchases
- Final Consumer Pays: Ultimately, end consumer bears the GST cost
GST Registration
- Mandatory: For businesses with turnover above ₹40 lakhs (₹20L for services)
- Special States: ₹20 lakhs threshold for NE states
- Composition Scheme: 1% GST for small businesses (turnover up to ₹1.5 Cr)
- E-commerce Sellers: Must register regardless of turnover
Restaurant GST Rates
- 5% GST: Non-AC restaurants and takeaway
- 18% GST: AC restaurants with liquor license
- No ITC: Restaurants cannot claim input tax credit
Frequently Asked Questions
What is 18% GST on ₹1000?
18% GST on ₹1000 is ₹180. Final price = ₹1000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180. Use our calculator to calculate GST on any amount instantly.
How to calculate GST backwards from MRP?
Formula: Base Price = MRP ÷ (1 + GST Rate/100). For example, if MRP is ₹1,180 with 18% GST: Base = 1180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000. Use our "Remove GST" mode.
Does CGST + SGST = Total GST?
Yes, for intra-state purchases, CGST + SGST = Total GST. For 18% GST: CGST 9% + SGST 9% = 18% total. Both go to different governments.
Is GST included in MRP?
Yes, MRP (Maximum Retail Price) includes all taxes including GST. You cannot be charged more than MRP printed on the product.
What is GST on restaurant bills?
5% GST for non-AC restaurants and takeaway. 18% GST for AC restaurants with bar. No input tax credit (ITC) available for restaurants.
Do I need to pay GST as a consumer?
As an end consumer, you pay GST on products/services you buy. It's included in the price. Only businesses registered for GST need to file returns.
Can I claim GST refund?
Only registered businesses can claim input tax credit (ITC). Individual consumers cannot claim GST refund on purchases. Exporters can claim GST refund.
What is the difference between IGST and CGST+SGST?
IGST is charged on inter-state sales (between different states). CGST+SGST is charged on intra-state sales (within same state). Total tax amount remains same.
Which products have 0% GST?
Essential items like fresh vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, bread, books, and newspapers are exempt from GST (0% rate).
How to save money on GST?
Buy items with lower GST rates when possible. Fresh produce has 0% GST. Compare similar products - some may have different GST rates. Bulk buying doesn't reduce GST rate.
